2007 Chan Fellows

UCLA:

Chen Wei (Stephanie), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Stephanie interned at Heart of Los Angeles, a youth service organization.

Xu Wen (Jessy), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences. Jessy worked at the Center for Healthy Aging.

Zhong Min (Rita), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences. Rita was an intern at the UCLA Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles.

Hok Him Lee (Tim), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Tim worked at the UCLA William C. Velasquez Institute.

UC Berkeley:

Huang Zhimin (Jack), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Jack interned at TILT and the Film Arts Foundation. To view a video clip of Jack summarizing his experience, click here.

Li Qin (Ada), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Social Work. Ada applied her social work experience in her internship with UC Berkeley's Therapeutic Nursery School.

Lok Ling Yuan (Circle), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Circle worked at the Museum of Children's Art. Her areas of interests are arts education and youth.

Xiong Zhou (Vivica), Sun Yat-sen University School of Huamnities and Social Sciences, French Major. Vivica interned at the Institute of International Education's West Coast Office, assisting with the implementation of the International Visitor Leadership Program. 2006 Chan Fellows

UCLA:

Huang Jinfeng (David), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. David is interning at Community Partners, a nonprofit incubator that provides technical assistance to new and emerging non-profit, social organizations.

Lu Liwen (Elisa), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences. Elisa is working at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). This organization seeks to advance the human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees in Los Angeles

Wan Lok Kwan (Monique), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Lok Kwan is working at the California Hospital's Hope Street Family Center Presevation Project and with one of the site's partners, the Asian Pacific Women's Center. At both sites, she will explore solutions to domestic violence.

Xu Lin (Catherine), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Law School. Catherine is working at Public Counsel, the largest pro-bono law organization in the country.

UC Berkeley:

Chen Huiming (Jasmine), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Huiming is working at The Berkeley Alliance, a partnership between the City of Berkeley, Berkeley Unified School District, and the University of California at Berkeley that works to develop creative collaborative solutions to local issues. She is assessing mental health provisions for K-12 students in Berkeley as part of the Berkeley Integrated Resources Initiative.

Huang Jingjing (Stephy), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Social Work. Jingjing is applying her social work experience in her internship with Asian Pacific Psychological Services, an Oakland community-based organization that provides social services, including mental health services, family counseling, and substance abuse services to low-income communities in the East Bay.

Ko Yu Fei (Kuffy), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Yu Fei is working at Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) a nonprofit agency that provides legal assistance, representation, community referrals, and training on legal issues to Alameda County residents aged 60 and older. He leads educational workshops on legal rights in the community and assists in individual case management.

Liao Huidian (Ivy), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Huidian is working at Resources for Community Development, a non-profit housing development corporation with the mission of creating and preserving affordable housing for people with the fewest options in Northern California. She is working in the main office as well as at several of RCD's housing sites, including a site in Oakland where she is designing and managing an afterschool tutoring program for youth.

2005 Chan Fellows

UCLA:

He Min (Hermia), Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen Universit. Hermia interned at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC)

Au Lai Wing (Ally), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Ally worked on several projects at ArtsCorps.

Chan Wing (Sharon), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Sharon assisted with the Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM) program of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC)

Wang Yingxin (Yuki), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Law School. Yuki worked at the Center for Law in the Public Interest, a nonprofit, public interest law firm. She conducted research, drafted legal briefs and laid the ground work for several new projects. She also attended a conference in L.A. on Clinical Legal Education.

UC Berkeley:

Li Jun, Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Unfortunately, Li Jun was not able to participate in the program.

Wu Dongni (Grace), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Law School. Utilizing her legal expertise as a law student, Wu Dongni worked for the East Bay Community Law Center.

Lau Sau Yee (Lydia), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Lydia worked at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

Weng Jinghua (Jessie), SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences, worked at Housing Rights, Inc.

2004 Chan Fellows

UCLA:

Yao Yinyan (Sandy) SYU, Humanities and Social Sciences-School of Foreign Languages. As a Chan Fellow, Yao Yinyan assisted with the Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM) program of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). She helped students from marginalized communities apply to college.

Liu Jingjing, SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences-Law School. Employing her legal skills, Liu Jingjing worked at the Center for Law in the Public Interest, a nonprofit, public interest law firm. She conducted research, drafted legal briefs and laid the ground work for several new projects.

Zhang Jingjun, Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. June worked at the Chinatown Service Center publicizing the Center's work in heath outreach, economic development and voter registration.

Cheung Ching Yi (Cherry), Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Cherry worked on several projects at the City of Inglewood Community Services, focusing on its senior centers.

UC Berkeley:

Wang Qiong, Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University. Wang Qiong worked at two organizations: Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) and the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN).

Liaw Shu Yee (Zoe), Lingnan University, Hong Kong worked at the "Over 60 Clinic" of the LifeLong Medical Center as the outreach assistant in the East Bay Benefits Coalition. She guided seniors through the BenefitCheckUp which is a system developed by the National Council on the aging.

Zhao Qixian, SYSU Humanities and Social Sciences. Utilizing her legal expertise as a law student, Zhao Qixian worked for the Asian Law Caucus where she provided legal training for low-income Chinese immigrants.

Cao Di, SYSU, Humanities and Social Sciences, Social Work. DiDi worked at three sites, primarily on outreach to the Chinese immigrant community. These were the Museum of Children's Art, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center and the Lawrence Hall of Science.

2003 Chan Fellows

Au Wing Han (Elise) was an undergraduate student at Lingnan University in Hong Kong studying Marketing and Business Administration.

Lai Pui Yu (O'nes) of Lingnan University in Hong Kong was very active in Project X, a joint community service project for youth at risk. While a Chan Fellow, she interned with the Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM) in Boyle Heights and catalyzed the progress of the UCLA AmeriCorps VISTA projects by recruiting high school students and assisting with the development of a fundraising plan.

Song Yueting (Clare) of Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University, majored in International Business. She worked at Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). Under the Multimedia Department, Clare undertook several fundraising projects and also helped develop a business plan to market orginal products created by the organization and its constituents.

Zeng Yuyang (Juliet), a postgraduate student at Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University, majored in World Economics. Juliet worked on several projects at the City of Inglewood Community Services, focusing on its senior centers. She taught a Tai Chi class and led workshops on Chinese culture.

Qi Yong (Michael), of Sun Yat-sen University with an M.A in Enterprise Management. He served as a youth volunteer in aXi'an Orphanage, as a volunteer teacher in Guangxi Nandam Zhengxin Children's Welfare Center and in a drug abuse center in Guiyang. Michael interned with Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald and was responsible for a property management analysis project.

Zeng Yu (Gary) , a postgraduate law student at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. He has performed countless hours of community service working in legal clinics assisting those who could otherwise not afford legal representation. He worked at the Center for Law in the Public Interest (CLIPI) and was assigned to projects that impact the Chinatown area of Los Angeles.

2002 Chan Fellows

Chan Chui Ying (Cherie), Lingnan University, BA, Marketing, 2003. As a Chan Fellow, Cherie assisted with the Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM) program of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). She organized a series of Chinese culture workshops for Watts community youth.

Leung Wing Sze (Jojo), Lingnan University, BA, Social Science, 2003. While a Chan Fellow, she interned with the Youth Opportunity Movement (YOM) in Boyle Heights. She created a survey to assess the interests of youth served by Boyle Heights and organized environmental workshops.

Li Zhuowen (Owen), Lingnan (University) College, BA, International Finance, 2003. Owen capitalized on his interest in automobiles and organized several workshops on cars that brought together fathers and sons in the community. He also helped the City of Inglewood advertize and coordinate its annual auto show.

Shen Qi (Rebecca), Lingnan (University) College, BA, Finance and Mathematics, 2003. Rebecca chose to work at the City of Inglewood Community Services, and created an oral history program that brought together seniors and young people in that community.

Wu Xun (Alvin), Lingnan (University) College, BA, International Finance, 2003. He worked at Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). Under the Technical Services department, Alvin worked a proposal to obtain funding for day-care services. He also volunteered with the afterschool program.

Zhi Lu (Lulu), Lingnan (University) College, BA, Economics, 2003. Lulu worked at the Connections Program at Maclay Middle School in Pacoima. She tutored students and developed an afterschool Chinese culture club for 15-20 students that met three days a week.

2001 Chan Fellows
 
Chen Yan (Jane), a graduate student at Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, majored in international economics. She worked at Pacoima Beautiful, a grassroots organization in the low-income minority community of Pacoima dedicated to improving the environment and health of community residents.
 
 
Florence (Meng Soi) Fong
planned and organized various workshops for children and seniors such as computer skills, role-playing activities, crafts, and sightseeing, among other things, at the City of Inglewood, Inglewood Senior Center.
 
 
Lai Siyi is from Guangzhou, China. She was an undergraduate majoring in international business at Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University. She volunteered at Girls Today, Women Tomorrow, an organization seeking to improve the lives of girls.
 
 
Luo Jinghuan (Christine)
was born in Hunan Province, China, and raised in Foshan City in Guangdong Province. She was a graduate student at Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, majoring in international trade. She received her Master's degree in June 2002. She worked at the Hope Street Family Center which offers a host of activities for the local community such as after-school programs for children, computer classes, and parenting classes.
 
 
Carol (Hok Ka) Ma completed her undergraduate studies in the Social Sciences (Hons) with a major in Sociology in Lingnan University of Hong Kong. She worked with the City of Inglewood, "Circle of Friends" which seeks to improve the lives of the disabled and mentally challenged. She is currently Programme Coordinator at the Office of Service Learning, Lingnan University.
 
 
Ou Dongshu is from Guangzhou, China. As a Chan Fellow, she developed programs that focused on increasing the amount and quality of communication between children and their parents at the Elizabeth Learning Center, a school that addresses barriers to learning. She is currently a PhD candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is examining issues related to economics and education.
