Grants Program

Since 1954, the Lingnan Foundation has supported a grants program directed to a limited number of sites and institutions in South China. The Foundation continues to work mainly in:

Guangdong, primarily with Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University and its Lingnan (University) College in Guangzhou
Hong Kong, primarily with Lingnan University.

The Foundation also supports institutions or organizations in the United States or elsewhere that reflect the Lingnan tradition and the Foundation’s goals.

The Foundation supports programs that promote liberal learning.

Liberal learning prepares students to live responsible, productive and creative lives in a changing world by developing intellectual skills and capacities through engagement with rich and challenging ideas across a range of subject areas.

It encourages students to be informed and responsive members of society by strengthening critical thinking, creative problem-solving, leadership capacity, intercultural sensitivity and adaptability, and a desire for lifelong learning.

The Foundation believes that the hallmarks of a strong liberal education curriculum include:

a) a focus on student learning and teaching that enables the mastery of analysis and expression

b) multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry

c) the integration of academic work with experience through community service, field study and internships

d) student participation in research and independent study

e) international perspectives and exchange

A liberal learning approach can be incorporated into all academic disciplines and professional education programs. The Foundation prefers to support programs that serve as a catalyst for innovation and provide support in key areas where funding is most difficult to secure, as they relate to liberal learning.
